Is there a charge for the show?
NO!!! But donations are always welcome. The equipment is fairly expensive so any support you can give is appreciated. We will always attempt to put the items we are requesting in the side-bar of the page so you know what the collective is spending your donation on. We may, for example, decide to buy a box of 3D glasses. If we do so it will show up on the side-bar. Donation requests may also include money to purchase new projector bulbs, or an umbrella license to show movies to the public. Before and after the first movie we will always ask for donations, please try and support the collective but donations are NOT compulsory.
Where do you show these movies?
The location is dynamic. If we find a suitable space, then we will attempt to stick with it; however, cold winters and other factors may require us to move around. We are always looking for promising locations. If you know of somewhere where there are very few lights, access to power or a vehicle, and a large surface, please let us know by joining and mailing the list. We will keep a record of any suggestions in case we have to find a new location. Note, always check the site as close to the showing time as possible. We may have a last minute change due to weather or some other unforeseen event.
No, I mean there is no information on where events are held on the site. Where can I find this information?
The short answer is that you can't if you don't have an Acquaintance ID. We are unable to post the location to the general public. This restriction is because copyright law is VERY restrictive when it comes to these sorts of things. Because of copyright law we cannot open the event to the public unless we have the permission of the copyright holder. There are, however, umbrella licenses that we do not yet have the money to afford. This law is, unfortunately, antithetical to the way in which we would like to build the community, but we do not intend to break it. That being said, the law may have an interesting side-effect. We are fairly certain that the direct intention of the law was not to restrict people's efforts to build healthy, social, communities. The reason most cited for copyright law is to "protect the artists." The reality is, of course, that the rights holders are often not the artists, but rather major corporations concerned with profit. This usually means that these latter entities care more about profit than romantic notions of community building. So what is the side-effect? The language used in copyright law requires that private showings be restricted to the circle of one's family and acquaintance. This means that rather than showing up to a public showing, watching a movie or two, and then going home as one would if there were not this copyright restriction, we are forced to close the event to the public, but encouraged to socialize and meet others to comply with the law. We have built a system to both restrict the general public, but encourage community building. This system is described below. So, until we can, if ever, get enough money to purchase an umbrella license, we will not post the locations to the general public. This means you must have an A-card or Acquaintance ID to view the location on the site.
What is an Acquaintance ID or A-card?
The Acquaintance ID is a unique random value that will allow you to view the location of a Guerilla Drive-In showing. The A-card is a wallet sized card that has a unique Acquaintance ID on it. These cards are only distributed to friends and acquaintance. The question above should help describe why we use these cards. One can get an Acquaintance ID by meeting a member of our community of friends. If you already have an Acquaintance ID please invite your friends and family to a Guerilla Drive-In event. This process is how we build our community, and we are always interested in making your acquaintance.
Should I bring food to the event?
Yes!!! In fact it would be even better if you brought food to share with others. There are vegans at these events, so if you want everyone to eat your yummy food, make it vegan friendly.
Should I bring an FM radio to the event?
Sorry, this is a contrived question, but the answer is YES. We use a small FM transmitter to distribute audio, this means that the more FM radios people bring, the better.
If this is a "Drive-In" what do you do in the winter?
We have showings inside during the winter. Even during the summer, we may opt to show the movie in a location where we can be out under the stars, rather then confined to our vehicles. This may mean we show it in a field, on the side of a wall, or if it is raining, inside. We do it all.
How can I help?
First you should join the mailing list. You can help out by bringing food, hosting a movie night, or helping to clean up after.
What does the Guerilla in "Guerilla Drive-In" mean?
"A member of an irregular, usually indigenous military or paramilitary unit operating in small bands in occupied territory to harass and undermine the enemy, as by surprise raids."
What equipment does the Southern Maine Guerilla Drive-In own?
At the moment we have recieved enough donations to pay for the Philips DVD player. Chris Mooney put the money up for the other equipment, which we hope to own in the future. To this end you may make a donation on any of the equipment in the side bar of the SMGDI site.
What is the first rule of Guerilla Drive-In?
You don't talk about Guerilla Drive-In. But we aren't big fans of rules.
